Amethyst geodes — the cavity-lined mineral formations that expose a surface completely covered in purple crystal — are among the most visually compelling natural objects, and their color contains more complexity than any single purple hue can capture. The crystals range from near-black at the deeply shadowed cavity points through the highly saturated deep purple of the crystal body, then through progressively lighter, more translucent purples as crystal thickness decreases, to near-white where quartz matrix surrounds the crystal formation.
