About Shades of Magenta

Magenta is not a spectral color — it doesn't appear in the rainbow and has no single wavelength. It's the brain's way of bridging the gap between red and violet light at opposite ends of the visible spectrum. This makes magenta a uniquely psychological color, one that exists only in our perception. As a result it feels inherently electric, artificial, and bold — qualities that have made it a mainstay of neon signs, pop art, and digital display.

In print, magenta is one of the four CMYK process colors, used to produce reds, purples, and pinks in combination with other inks. Process magenta sits in the middle of the family's range — not as pink as hot pink, not as purple as dark magenta. The pale end of the family (orchid, sky magenta, puce) feels more feminine and decorative. At the deep end, dark magenta and quinacridone magenta are rich, serious pigment colors with fine art and printing heritage.
